Marvin Ayres - Cycle: 12 sketches for recycling piano harmonics

12 very dark droning sounds. not noise, but a dark ambient with the feeling of SPK's best ambient works. somehow erotic. i have used these sounds as backgrounds in dungeon scenes. not often grabbing your attention but somehow always filtering into your mind. perfect for use in dark trance ceremonies or pagan meditations. at times in a dark room, you will feel chills ascending your spinal column as the tones reach minor chords of pure sadness. for fans of microtonal works and dismal droning. not for a happy day. with long tracks that meld into each other, this can easily be left on in a cd loop for the torture (i mean enjoyment) of someone who perhaps cannot leave an unlit wet dripping basement. perhaps it is already in use in Guatanamo bay. i would not leave this on when sleeping, unless you are fond of nightmares. beautifully morose. if one were looking for what real gothic music should sound like, this would be it. aesthetically beautiful, but without light or happiness. all shadows, sadness and subdued terror. fans of Lull, will lose their shit over this puppy. made in england which seems very appropriate. pick this up and lose some sleep.

the 10 minute and change first track sets the pace, slow dirgy depressing drones that make you want to slip into a bathtub with slit wrists open. if you've made it to the end you are either a masochist or real lover of the morose. not recommended for mall goths or noise fetishists. perfect for the background of a future fascist state mind numbing machines. suffice to say its on my playlist. my wife claims the music is very soothing and beautiful, lovely drones and peaceful. perhaps alcohol is required for such reflections. perhaps the soundspace is open enough to let your mind wander to where it wants to. mine is to terror. perhaps yours would go to fields of flowers and happy thoughts. the 2nd track brings machines attacking your senses with waves of nausea inducing stuttering. It was originally designed as a "DVD surround sound film installation". This makes perfect sense, sounds are all around you. Real pianos were played and the sounds manipulated. I concur with his conlusions on "self assembly motifs" and "psycho acoustics". No actual chords are used! Just the sounds that linger after. very cool.

Marvin Ayres - Scape

These are much more upbeat with beats and rhythm. A dark but moving soundscape that is less oppressive then Cycle. The tracks are shorter and faster moving. 20 tracks over dark sections. The names help imply what's going on. Contains real violin work. "voco pluck", "rainy jazz", "cant dance", "ambient drum". some are real quiet. very much prime period SPK, no noise classical ambience with deep textures. i am sure there are a more than a few techno / technoid/powernoise djays that would love to sample huge pieces of these works and drop in some ultra hard techno bass beats. i can see this as a soundtrack for a film, which is does metnion that it has the same name as the film 'Scape' and uses images from it for the cover.
